Garrett Evergard is a finder of secrets. As a biologist and environmentalist, it’s his job to go into wild lands and uncover their mysteries in order to save them. In the Pacific Northwest, he races against logging lobbyists to save a section of temperate rainforest, but the forest seems reluctant to give up her secrets. Until a fateful meeting with a rare spirit bear opens the door to wonders beyond anything he’s ever imagine, the greatest of those being the beautiful man who comes to his rescue.

As a witch and Gatekeeper, Bryson Summers is used to living a solitary life. He lives between two worlds, Earth and Terra, feeling not fully part of either, and dreams of meeting someone who understands him. From the moment he sees Garrett, he believes – and hopes – he’s looking upon a twin soul.

Dragons, unicorns, and a witch with enchanting brown eyes, Garrett tries to make sense of a world so different from anything he’s ever known. But his mind and heart are open, and he finds himself drawn more to Bryson with each day they spend together. When Bryson and the gate that links the two worlds fall under threat, Garrett is willing to do all he can to protect them, even if it means facing down dark magic.

Excerpt:
Garrett struggled through the black fog filling his mind. He could see the gray edges of it, knowing he was starting to come out of the dark labyrinth he’d been trapped in. He forced his eyes to open, and even though he only managed to part his lids to slits, the white light beyond stung and forced him to close them again.

He shifted on the bed, the warmth and softness of it and the blankets offering comfort to his aches, which grew in strength the more aware he became.

Garrett paused in his thoughts. Bed? Blankets? Where was he? A hospital? The last thing he remembered was the sunlight shining through the leaves, the chill of the stream water seeping through his clothes. Had he been found and rescued?

As his senses sharpened, he picked up someone talking, the voice male and gruff.

“He’s stable enough to be moved. Get him out of here.”

Another voice answered, also male, but younger, the tone deep and smooth, soothing and quiet. “We won’t know how stable he is until he wakes up.”

Accusation entered into the first voice. “By then it’ll be too late! He’ll find out!”

“Well, he wouldn’t be the first person who had. Obviously.”

Garrett lay unmoving, not that he was entirely sure how well he could move. He didn’t know where he was, but from the conversation, it sure as hell wasn’t a hospital. What’d happened to him? Had he been discovered by some backwoods people living in anonymity, and now his presence threatened that? Whatever it was, it sounded like he was in a bad situation and he needed to get himself out of it.

He didn’t know what to do. Should he alert them he was awake, or play dead until he could find out more about where he was and who these people were?

A soft thump on the bed to his right snapped him from his thoughts. He froze, holding his breath, straining his ears. His pillow dipped with something pressing down on it. He risked rolling his head slightly toward it, opening his eyes.

He shouted, flinging himself back toward the far side of the bed, nearly toppling over the edge. The cause of his surprise also let out a startled scream, reptilian hands flung upward as it tumbled backward off the bed.

Garrett sat upright, his breathing heavy. Footsteps pounded closer. Garrett looked toward the sound as the source crested the top of a flight of stairs. He met eyes of such dark brown, they appeared black, but even with the surprise and concern in the dark eyes, they were soft, gentle.

The man’s gaze darted from him to the floor on the right side of the bed. He rushed forward. “Wynny!”

The man slid down to his knees, disappearing on the other side of the bed. Cautiously, Garrett inched toward the edge, peering down at the man and the…lizard? No. Wait. The dragon.

No larger than a cat, the dragon pushed off its side to sit up, and was scooped into the man’s arms. Its scales were white, but as the light hit them, an iridescent sheen glistened over them. Two ivory-colored horns spiraled out from the back of the dragon’s refined, small head, which was held up on a long, slender neck. Triangular spikes, the same ivory color as the horns, ran down the back of its neck, back, and tail. The tip of its tail ended in a spear-like point.

The dragon raised one front leg, rubbing its head with its clawed hand.

“Are you okay?” the man asked it.

The dragon nodded.

“Flex your wings. Let me make sure.”

Neatly folded at his sides, the dragon extended its wings.

Each wing was more than twice as long as the dragon’s body. Delicate bones ran through them, held together by leathery white skin that had a slight pinkish tint as the light shone through it. Garrett looked to the man at hearing his sigh of relief.

“They look fine. Do you hurt anywhere else? Other than bumping your head?”

The dragon shook his head.

Garrett stared at the duo, amazed and confused by the interaction. The dragon—and that was a word that had passed through his mind way too much lately—seemed to understand everything the man said. And as for the man, he found himself feeling more enchanted by him, than by seeing another dragon.

Sweeping, sharp cheekbones accented the man’s Native American features. He looked young, probably in his mid-twenties at most. His raven-black hair hung straight and sleek past his shoulders. His left ear was pierced with a silver ring in the cartilage, a white feather and a black feather dangling from it. The light tan of his buckskin shirt and pants complimented his deep bronze skin tone. But it was the man’s eyes—the bottomless, dark eyes—with a lovely almond shape, that had his attention.

The man brushed a hand down the dragon’s back to the side of the spikes. “It looks like you’re going to be okay.” He looked up to Garrett, a smile curving his lips. “And it looks like our guest is going to be okay, too.” He glanced to the dragon. “The two of you startled each other, huh?”

The dragon nodded, tipping his head back to Garrett.

Garrett swore the dragon was smiling at him, and he got his first good look at the dragon’s eyes, a green radiant enough to shame precious emeralds, with pupils slit like a cat’s.

“How do you feel?”

The question asked by that quiet, calming voice pulled Garrett back to the moment. He looked to the man. “I’m…not sure. Physically, I feel like I got hit by a truck. Or, fell down a ravine, which I guess I did. I’m kind of lost for words on other things.”

The man laughed, deep and soft. Rising, he tucked the dragon in his arms. “I can understand that. You’ve just had a pretty big shock. And from my understanding, it wasn’t the first in the past couple days. But you’re safe here, so that’s one less thing for you to worry about.” He sat on the edge of the bed and offered his hand. “I already know your name, Garrett Evergard. It was on your driver’s license. But I should give you mine now that you’re awake. I’m Bryson Summers.”

Garrett slowly extended his hand, watching as Bryson’s long, slender fingers wrapped around it in a strong, but gentle hold.

“You look confused,” Bryson said.

A single, humorless laugh left Garrett. His voice was rough with disuse as he spoke. “That’s an understatement.”

Blurb:
Struggling to come to terms with his grief and guilt over his twin brother’s death, Ian feels he’s living in a world devoid of color. He once rode the highs of success and fame as a model, but he lost everything when his brother died suddenly. When his former agent invites him to Bora Bora, Ian accepts with the hope of finding color in his dark world.

Temaru owns a diving shop in Bora Bora. As he walks along the beach at sunset, he sees a beautiful man sitting in the white sand. Deeply attracted to Ian, he wants nothing more than to help him recover his confidence.

Lust, desire and emotions run high between them. Ian feels the man he used to be slowly returning, guided by Temaru’s gentle touch. But Temaru will have his hands full with Ian’s overwhelming grief.

Excerpt:
Ian watched the sun sink lower in the crimson-and-orange-streaked sky. The reflection of the fiery sky kissed the waters of the lagoon, turning them violet as the waves rolled over the white sand. It was a beauty so grand it was almost overwhelming for him. That’s what he thought the moment he’d seen Bora Bora from the plane; a verdant jewel outlined in ivory sand embraced by turquoise waters. Even though it was the rainy season and there’d been a downpour earlier that day, almost before it finished, the sun pushed its way through the clouds once again.

He’d never seen a sunset like this before. Often Aidan would drag him out onto the balcony of their penthouse to show him a particularly pretty sunset or unusual cloud pattern. If Aidan could’ve seen this one, he’d have tears in his eyes from the beauty. But Aidan had always been more of a nature lover than him. Now he was beginning to understand why. It was easy to forget about how breathtaking the natural world could be beyond concrete and skyscrapers and all things manmade.

“Magnificent, no?”

Ian startled at the voice behind him. He whipped his head around and froze. A man stood behind him, wearing only dark-green, slim-fitted swim shorts, showing long legs lined in muscle. The tops of the man’s narrow hips peeked out of the shorts. With his gaze, Ian traced each groove in the other man’s defined abdomen up his smooth skin to thick pectorals. Even at rest, his biceps and forearms looked solid and they led down to broad, strong hands.

Ian moved his gaze to the man’s face. He looked young. From how finely developed his body was and the maturity emanating from him, Ian guessed him to be in his late twenties. His features were a striking blend of Polynesian and European. He had fine cheekbones, full lips, but what caught Ian’s attention most was the other man’s eyes, beautifully almond shaped and golden-brown in color. His hair fell to his jawline, rich mahogany that the sunset pulled bronze highlights from. His coppery skin glistened in the waning light with a light sheen of sweat from the warm, humid weather.

Ian almost doubted it was a real man before him. He looked more like a tropical god.

The other turned his gaze from the sunset to him. “I apologize. I interrupted your solitude.”

In the honeyed baritone, Ian caught his accent with a French lilt. It was memorizing to hear and he wanted to hear it more. “No, you’re okay.”

“May I?” he asked, gesturing to the sand at Ian’s side.

“Sure.”

Taking a seat beside him, he extended his hand to Ian. “Temaru Marceau.”

Ian took his hand. Now that Temaru was closer, he picked up his scent, the sweet smell of coconuts edged with a delicate flowery fragrance and beneath those, the faint musk of masculinity. An intoxicating combination. “Ian Eldridge. Marceau…you’re French?”

“More like half. My mother is Tahitian, my father is French. Where are you from?”

“Chicago, in the United States.”

Temaru grinned at him. “I know where Chicago is.”

Ian directed his gaze back to the sunset. Well, nothing like starting off a conversation with a hot guy by putting his foot in his mouth.

Temaru broke the silence. “Watching the sunset is better when shared with another, even a stranger, don’t you think?”

The memories of watching the sunset with his brother flashed through Ian’s head. “Yeah,” he said softly.

“Though I’ll admit, I prefer the sunrise. I’m not sure why. Perhaps because the light is growing stronger rather than weakening. It always feels to me there’s more hope in the sunrise.”

A sarcastic snort came from Ian’s nose before he could stop it. “What are you, a poet?”

Temaru laughed. “No. I’m a scuba diver. I have a shop near the docks and a boat that I take tourists out diving and snorkeling. Have you ever been diving?”

“A couple of times. My brother talked me into taking lessons and we dove in Lake Michigan.” Ian glanced at Temaru, seeing the slight smirk quirking one corner of his lips. “What’re you grinning at?”

“Lake Michigan? Did you see anything interesting beyond old tires and beer bottles?”

Ian chuckled softly. “Hey, it’s not that bad. It might not be coral reefs and tropical fish but there are some pretty cool shipwrecks down there.”

“I stand corrected then. And since you’re already an accomplished diver, you’ll have to let me to take you out.”

“I wouldn’t say I’m accomplished. Aidan was a much better diver than me.”

“He’s your brother?”

“Is…and was. He passed away a few years ago.”

Temaru’s countenance shifted to an expression of sympathy. “I’m sorry.”

Ian shook his head to let Temaru know his words hadn’t upset but couldn’t muster his voice to say so. Not knowing what to say, he raised a hand to his mouth and began systematically biting at his thumbnail following along the edge.

“That’s a bad habit,” Temaru said.

“Yeah, I know. I don’t even know where or when I picked it up. Just sort of happened without me realizing.” Ian pulled his hand away from his mouth and placed both slightly behind him, leaning back on them. Out the corner of his eye, he saw Temaru contemplating him. He didn’t need to look at him to feel the intensity of his gaze. It wasn’t a gaze of hot attraction but more as if Temaru was studying him. He wondered what Temaru was thinking. Did he find him attractive? Was Temaru deciding if he was good enough to sleep with? Was he regretting having spoken to him at all? His thoughts started to make him edgy.

“Did you travel here alone?” Temaru asked quietly.

Ian’s heartbeat quickened at the deep tone of Temaru’s voice, the unasked question underlying the spoken one. “No, I came with friends.” He looked at Temaru. “But just friends.”

“That’s good to hear. Would your friends be disappointed if you abandoned them for an afternoon to dive with me?”

Ian quickly shook his head. “Not all at.”

“Then how would tomorrow morning be? About ten o’clock? You could meet me at my shop. After our dive, we’ll have lunch.”

“That’d be great.”

Temaru gave Ian directions to his shop. With their plans set, he stood, lightly slapping sand off his shorts and smiling at him. “I wish I could stay longer, but I have a group waiting for me to take them on a night dive. Until our date.”

Dumbstruck to speechlessness, Ian only managed a nod. He continued to stare at Temaru’s muscular back as he walked away until the growing darkness stole him from sight. It seemed a surreal dream that a few moments ago, Temaru had sat beside him. Part of him even wondered if he really had or if Temaru was nothing more than a beautiful hallucination. But he had a date with him.

Ian’s mind locked up at the thought. He had a date. He hadn’t been on a date in years. That wasn’t to say he’d been celibate. There was a difference between a date and a hook-up. A date meant more than sex. It was companionship…which usually led to sex. For him, at least. But a hook-up was just catching a name before the first orgasm and didn’t require him to remember it beyond the last one of the night.

Of course, he could be completely overreacting. Just because Temaru said “date” didn’t mean he thought of it as being anything more than taking a tourist on a dive. If that was the case, he’d be disappointed, but he’d also look forward to simply seeing Temaru again. Besides getting to admire his breathtaking body, he felt drawn to Temaru’s calm, quiet confidence.

At the thought of spending more time with Temaru, an excited rush went through Ian. He couldn’t remember when he had last felt excited about spending time with someone. When he did go out for a hook-up, he never felt excited to be with them personally. It was more the rush of getting laid and even that hadn’t been too hot lately.

Ian reached up with one hand to run his fingers through his hair, his progress stopped short by tangles. It might be wind-blown but it was also a mess in general. He got a mental image of himself and how he must look, thought of the clothes he’d brought with him and let out a low, self-deprecating groan. No matter what Temaru had in mind for tomorrow, he needed to get himself cleaned up. He should at least buy a new pair of swim shorts other than the frumpy blue ones he was wearing.

Ian stood and walked up the beach. He was sure one of the posh resorts would have a good salon. He needed to look as fine as possible for his date.

HOW TO SAVE A LIFE, Gay Erotic Romance / Suspense

Adult Excerpt for HOW TO SAVE A LIFE by Sloan Parker

Walter examined the closet walls and floorboards for a hidden compartment where cash or drugs could be stored. He came up empty again.

He continued on to the bathroom down the hall. The light from the hallway offered enough illumination to see inside. A long, narrow room. Kevin stood at the far end before the mirror. The towel with the ice sat on the edge of the sink. He had something in his hand. A bottle.

"Did you miss the part where I said don't touch anything?"

Kevin jumped. He dropped the bottle into the sink. It bounced, and he fumbled several times as he tried to catch it. Finally the bottle settled at the bottom of the sink. "I, uh...I was just..."

Walter moved in close so he could peer over Kevin's shoulder into the sink. A bottle of Slick It. "That's good shit."

"It is?" Kevin leaned backward. Whether he meant to do it or not, the top of his ass connected with Walter's dick. Then that incredible pressure was gone as Kevin spun around to face Walter. "What's it like?"

"The lube?"

"Sex. With men. You know...anal sex. Oh God. Never mind. Forget I asked that." He went to turn away, but Walter stopped him with a hand on Kevin's hip.

"You mean, what's it liked to get fucked up the ass?"

Kevin's lower lip trembled. "Yeah."

The inspiration running through Walter's brain was probably not the best idea. Not here. But Kevin had asked a direct question.

Walter spun Kevin to face the mirror and leaned in against his back and ass, pinning him between the edge of the sink and his own body. "If you and I were doing it right now, I'd start with getting you good and hard." He watched Kevin in the mirror as he glided his hand down the front of the blue shirt, then over the top of the leather pants, finally cupping the bulge the pants did nothing to hide.

He shifted his hips forward and back, putting a touch of pressure on Kevin's ass again and again, and Kevin returned the stare in the mirror.

"You'd feel how hard I was too." Walter cupped Kevin's chin and turned his head to the side. "Then I'd kiss you." Their lips met. Nothing slow or soft about this kiss. Walter opened his mouth and forced Kevin's wide. Their tongues connected in an instant and moved in a rhythmic give-and-take of pleasure until Walter made himself pull back.

"Then I'd trace your body with my mouth, lower and lower until I could feel how hard you really were--with my lips. I'd take you deep into my mouth until you forgot how nervous you were. Until all you could focus on was every stroke and flick of my tongue."

"Oh God." Kevin gripped the edges of the sink in both hands

"Then I'd release your dick and move in behind you." Walter opened Kevin's leather pants, then slipped his hand between their bodies and inside the back of the pants. Kevin spread his legs wider.

Beautiful. The way he gave in to his desires.

Walter kept his hand moving down Kevin's ass until he had his middle finger pressed between Kevin's ass cheeks. He ran his finger over Kevin's hole and continued to rock his own body, adding more pressure to Kevin's ass with each shift of his hips. "I'd get my cock slick. I'd lube us both up good, work your ass a little to loosen you up, get you used to the sensation of something inside you. Then my cock would be at your tight hole." He thrust against Kevin's ass and held still.

He lowered his voice and whispered in Kevin's ear. "My dick would stretch your asshole open, and there would be no denying what was happening to you as I worked the head of my cock inside your body."

Kevin's breath hitched, and he dropped his head forward. His fingers went pale as his grip on the edges of the sink tightened.

"Once the head of my dick was inside you, I'd stop, wait, let the burn ease, let you really feel my thick cock penetrating your body." Walter held still, keeping his achingly hard dick snug against the back of his own hand at Kevin's ass. "Then, when I couldn't stand it any longer, when the tight heat of your body drove me absolutely crazy, I'd wait one more second, and then I'd thrust. Over and over until I had my cock buried inside you." He shifted his hips harder, forward and back, pressing his finger over and around Kevin's hole again and again, desperately wishing he'd taken the time to get Kevin's pants down and his own out of the way. But that would've been too much. For both of them.

Walter leaned down and licked along the nape of Kevin's neck, savoring the taste and scent of him.

"Then I'd bend you over so my dick would hit that spot inside you that drives a man wild. With every thrust I'd milk the pleasure from your body. Your cock would be leaking like crazy. It would be the most intense, drawn-out sexual experience you've ever known. And when I came in your ass, when you felt my heat inside you, then, and only then, would I stroke your dick until you came, your body alive and on fire. It'd be like nothing you've felt before."

"Oh God." Kevin snapped his hips and moaned.

Walter picked up the pace of his finger and his thrusts. Kevin bent forward over the sink, his hands sliding along the surface on each side. His right hand knocked over a can of shaving cream.

The can bounced on the floor, the metal smacking the linoleum over and over. The banging snapped Walter out of the trance he seemed to be in since entering the bathroom.

Oh God was right.

He was seriously losing it. Practically fucking with their clothes on in the bathroom of a stranger's apartment while they looked for clues to find said stranger. He'd never been so out of control while working on a case. Kevin's hunger just called to him. In a way no one else ever had. Not this fast. Not with this much intensity.

Walter pulled his hand out and drew back, easing up on the pressure against Kevin's ass, but he kept his grip on Kevin's hip. He glided his lips along the side of Kevin's neck to his ear, letting his tongue swipe at the flesh along the way. "Did that answer your question?"

Take Me Home by Sloan Parker

Excerpt for Take Me Home by Sloan Parker

Best friends finding their way to forever in each other's arms.

Evan shivered. Which made no sense. He was still warm from the run, the sweat on his skin not even dry yet.

Kyle took another step. Evan wanted him to stop. He wanted to shout all the reasons why this had to stop, before it got started, wanted to tell Kyle not to move another inch.

He didn't.

And Kyle didn't stop coming at him until they were practically touching, Kyle staring down at him.

Evan tried to focus on Kyle's words, on the news about the journal and his grandpa, but all he could think about was what he'd seen when he'd walked into the apartment: Kyle, all skin and taught muscles, wearing only his tight-as-sin white underwear, the briefs stretched over his cock, and the way Kyle had looked at him in the dim light of the hallway.

Just once. He's leaving anyway. Evan closed his eyes and forced himself to concentrate on the conversation. He looked up at Kyle again. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah." Kyle said the word with a slight curve of his lips. He took a step back and reclined against the wall, looking casual, like he was about to flirt with a bartender for a free drink. "After I read it, I was thinking about that night in the motel room in Iowa on our first drive out here." He slowly swung his head in Evan's direction. "Do you remember that night?"

Evan nodded.

"Do you ever think about it?" Kyle's voice was barely a whisper.

Up until a few months ago, Evan hadn't let himself, but since he'd moved in with Kyle... "Sometimes."

"Like right now?"

"Yeah."

Kyle slid along the wall, traveling the last remnants of space between them. "Ev, I've been waiting ten years to finish what we started." He pushed off the wall and turned until they were face-to-face again, his dark eyes unflinching as he leaned in. He stopped before their lips touched. The heat of that mouth and body so close stoked the fire inside Evan.

His own body reacted, his cock pushing at his shorts. He wanted to shove Kyle against the wall and kiss him until morning, do everything he'd ever dreamed of when it came to touching Kyle, everything he ached to feel about the man.

The smile Kyle gave him next wasn't the usual cocky one he'd used with countless guys over the years. He pressed forward and slid his lips along Evan's skin from the base of his neck to his earlobe, leaving a trail of goose bumps in his wake. He lingered over Evan's ear and whispered, "You smell so damn good. I want to fuck you, Ev."

Evan shivered again. "We shouldn't..." He couldn't say more. Didn't want to. The time for talking was over. Kyle ran the tip of his tongue along the outside of Evan's ear, and Evan instinctively moved closer. His breath hitched with the touch of Kyle's bare abs against him. Why had he worn a T-shirt to go running?

Using only the weight of his body, Kyle turned them until Evan's back was against the hall wall, then flattened his palms to the wall on either side of Evan's head. He licked his lips and spread his legs until their bodies lined up groin to groin, then rolled his hips, putting pressure against Evan's cock. "God, Ev..."

With that movement, those two words, Evan groaned and let his head fall back to the wall. He couldn't stop himself. He rocked his hips in time with Kyle's. The feel of Kyle's body, his hard cock against him, drove his own arousal higher.

Kyle spoke again, his voice even lower. "It could be so fucking good."

Evan lost track of the arguments he'd been telling himself since he'd left the apartment earlier. He raised his head, and their lips met, the softest brush of flesh until Kyle opened his mouth, seized Evan by the back of the head, and slid his tongue into the touch. The kiss deepened, and Evan thought he'd never be able to stop feeling Kyle's mouth on his, their tongues pressed together.

Chapter One

Hot water felt so good after a day in the dust and heat. Sonny Goss turned, let it pour over his back and ass while he listened for the phone. He spread his legs, leaned his palms on the shower glass, let the water do wonderful things to every nerve ending in the center of him. The flood of sensation made him think of the night ahead. From the shower, he could see the foot of his bed, and the clothes laid out there.

Crisp black denim waited for him, and hand-tooled Lucchese boots, a black linen shirt, bone-bead belt and Diamond Jim Stetson -- all genuine, no cheap knockoffs. The ensemble had set him back a cool grand, with the diamond studs in his lobes and the Ambre Topkapi that would be shimmering on his skin -- hot, sweat-slick and lustrous with pheromones by midnight.

The best thing about being Sonny Goss was, he could afford it all -- and the cherry red '71 Mustang Mach 1 in the garage under the apartment building. Often, he had to pinch himself, make sure he was still awake, not dreaming while he killed time, crashed on a friend's couch, where he had been just twenty months ago.

A chance audition changed everything. The part had looked bad, but he was desperate enough after six months on Nick's couch, eating noodles three times a day, to go read for anything. He was the thirteenth guy in line, and there were twelve chairs.

He sat on the floor, read an old car magazine, and by the time he made it into the hot, dark little cubbyhole they were using for an audition studio, he could not have cared less about actually getting the part.

Maybe that was what Paul Jordan was looking for -- he saw the character of Tommy Hathaway, in Dirtwater Duke, as a badass with attitude to match. A twenty-year-old drifter with a smart mouth, a fast gun, and a taste for ripe young cowboys who very soon learned what the words 'hard ridden' really meant.

The movie was crap, but as Paul predicted, it made money. Sonny liked to think he owned an 'ear' for dialog, and Paul Jordan might have been a good director with a talent for raising movie bucks from starry-eyed wannabe investors in California's gay community, but he was a lousy writer. So Sonny adlibbed most of the words coming out of Tommy Hathaway's mouth, and after that, let his body do the talking for him.

Twenty months later, he had eight movies to his credit -- two had been screened on Starz, one was top-selling on the gay DVD list, and Sonny Goss's face was looking out of posters and video trailers on forty websites. He had been featured in The Advocate, and here! was getting interested.

He looked up into the mirror opposite the shower and gave himself a grin. Even to his own eyes, it looked like a damned smug grin. Then again, he had a reason to be smug. He had done it. He had gone from being the gay kid kicked out by his father for bringing home a boyfriend and daring to fuck in the sanctuary of his own room, to being the poster boy for Take a Chance, Paul Jordan's company.

They were filming on a stage at Universal this week, headed out on location in another four days. Sonny could not wait to get out of the soundstage, back into the open air. One corner of the vast area was currently set up as the barn, for the night scene where one of the movie's eight sex scenes was being filmed.

The set was closed, and guarded to keep out visitors. Yesterday, the same space had been set up as the interior of the cabin belonging to John Black Wolf, with the big brass bed and the quilt made of patches of every color of rabbit skin. Wrestling there with Jeff Lucas, who was playing John, was fun. Understatement, Sonny thought as he turned off the water and stepped out of the shower.

He grabbed for a towel, flicked off the bathroom lights and headed into the bedroom, where the lamps were on, illuminating the room in a dull gold. Jeff was Canadian, half Native, from someplace in upstate Ontario. He was 22, a year older than Sonny, with long limbs and dark eyes, and hair so long, he could almost sit on it. He was perfect for the part of John Black Wolf, and Paul Jordan was gambling on the chemistry between him and Sonny.

Howl of the Black Wolf was the most expensive movie Take a Chance had ever produced. This one had horses; it had location filming, and two actual stunts -- as distinct from the sex scenes, Sonny thought with a chuckle while he toweled down -- as well as fourteen digital special effects shots, which were being done by a studio in Malaysia.

That handful of shots was costing more than the rest of the movie combined, and Paul was shitting bricks over them. He knew they, plus the stunts and location work, would make the difference between Howl being just another glossy gay soft-core flick, and a real movie with a fantasy twist.

Sonny had fallen in love with the project as soon as he read the script, even though Paul's dialog was as crappy as usual, and would have to be rewritten on the set, probably with three minutes left before shooting started. The dialog in Paul Jordan's movies was the least important element. The sex was usually the first thing anyone looked at -- 'tastefully explicit gay love scenes,' as Paul called them.

But Howl was more than soft-core. John Black Wolf was a skinwalker. He shifted shape between human hunk -- a six foot two, broad-shouldered young stallion who had had Sonny drooling since day one -- to a big black wolf with blue eyes and fangs the size of steak knives. The digital effects shots were essential -- these days, nobody would buy simple cross-fades or stop-motion animation. Jeff Lucas had to really turn into the wolf right before the eyes, and take the audience's breath away.

Actually, Jeff was changing into a wolf-cross called Jason. The animal trainer was another Canadian, Cooper Barlowe from Vancouver. He had actually bred Jason, who was half timber wolf, half Belgian Shepherd, black as midnight, with the bluest eyes Sonny had ever seen.

Jeff had already filmed one half of the scene, three days before. He stood under blue lights, made to simulate moonlight, and tore off his clothes. Naked, glorious, from the great slabs of his pecs to the cock and balls that hung like rich fruit between the big, football player thighs -- he spread his arms and legs and arched his back -- and froze right there. A Malaysian studio called Hydraulic Frog (where the hell did they get these names, Sonny wondered) was doing the 'bridge' between the human end of the shot and the other, wolven, end.

Cooper had brought in Jason, and the wolf was perfectly behaved. He stood on his mark while the lights were reset, then looked right at his handler and, on cue, like a proper actor, bared his huge fangs, threw back his head and howled.

The sound made Sonny's hair stand on end. Like Paul, he was dying to see the finished scene, where Jeff ripped off his clothes (the rushes of that part of the scene gave Sonny a huge boner, so it was a safe bet, this part of Howl was going to become an Internet legend) and morphed into Jason, howling at the moon, before he loped up to the camera and away out of frame.

It was the first time Sonny had ever been enthusiastic about a project he was filming. The others were all 'work.' Each low budget job was shot in a week or two, usually using a warehouse in Anaheim as a 'stage,' and they were mostly about a group of great looking young guys having a lot of sex. Paul wrote them, as well as producing and directing -- and what sent the Take a Chance movies apart from the bulk of soft-core was that Paul could usually find a really good excuse for the sex scenes.

Sometimes there was a thread of unrequited love, or it might be a forfeit for unpayable gambling debts, or a joke being played on a straight dude who rapidly discovered that he was nowhere near as straight as he had thought he was. And when the guys got down to business, it was always shot with taste and style. That was Paul Jordan's magic.

Howl of the Black Wolf had just as much sex, but a whole lot more story, and Sonny was excited to be heading out on location Tuesday morning. The company would be in a flyspeck town in northern California called Weott, on the Redwood Highway east of Avenue of the Giants.

The scenery was guaranteed to be superb. Four trained horses were coming down by truck from Oregon. Jason would be filmed loping through the redwoods in shots processed later to look like moonlight. And Jeff and Sonny would get naked and make out in places that would render the video sex shiveringly exotic.

Mostly dry now, he threw the towel back in the general direction of the bathroom. He was still waiting for the phone -- it was on the chest by the bed, mocking him with silence. Not even a text. Sonny gave it a glare, but he was not surprised. He had left voicemail for Jeff an hour before, when he got home.

'Hey, man, you want to get out tonight? Thank God it's Friday, or whatever? I'm going to The Corral, if you're interested. Call me, okay?"

Three or four times a month, Fridays or Saturdays, Sonny went to The Corral. The nights all started like this, with the daylight faded to colors of twilight and the sounds of evening traffic coming in through the open windows with the view of rooftops and dusty palm trees. LA smog would be hanging over the horizon like a brown pall in the sunset. He would shave, shower, grab a snack, change into the kind of threads that would get him through the door at The Corral --

Get him into the basement, where it all happened, much later, when the dancers were drifting on out in couples and trios and quads. The bouncers would be on duty at the side door in the muck and dark of the alley, and the real action would be starting. The Corral was aptly named, and just thinking about it gave Sonny an icy-hot thrill, a shiver down his spine.

He was a mere spectator, but part of the thrill was knowing, he could be in it. He could be a player, in there with the rest of them. One day; one night. Not today, but one day.

Maybe Jeff knew about The Corral -- it was no secret -- and maybe it was not his scene. Sonny might have been disappointed, but he was not surprised. Jeff had a lover stashed someplace in Toronto, a real estate broker who was always texting, calling, emailing, as if he did not trust Jeff not to sleep around while he was out here. Sonny had never even heard the guy's name, but the guy need not have worried. Jeff Lucas got a lot of offers, but he never accepted them. Not yet, anyway. He was as faithful as John Black Wolf was to his on-screen lover, Matt Rigley.

Sonny played Matt Ridley with a drawl, skin-tight blue denims, a Winchester over one shoulder, and a mouth always hungry to go down on John ... and he envied Matt, who was a fictional character right out of the head of Paul Jordan. Matt had the one thing Sonny had never had.

The worst thing about being Sonny Goss? Not being able to connect. There was always plenty of sex -- never any shortage of offers and, unlike Jeff, he never hesitated to take them. But the next morning was all about Pop-Tarts and coffee like black paint, and a door closing behind a guy who never looked as good in the morning light as he had at midnight or two in the AM ... and who always walked away.

He sighed, and gave himself another look in the mirror. A hard look. Naked. He looked good, and he knew he did, with long legs, hard-worked muscles, dark brown hair and eyes, from his Italian grandmother, smooth chest that barely even needed to be shaved, and a cock that was thick and golden when it was resting, and stood s good eight inches when it was interested. His skin was tanned evenly, with just the pale strip around his hips of the Speedos line. His hair was thick and long -- Paul liked it that way; he knew what suited Sonny, and the character of Matt Ridley.

The reviewers on Dirtwater Duke had called him 'surreal as an evil angel, with innocent eyes and wicked mouth.' Sonny pouted at himself, examined his shave and shook out the still-wet hair. It was rapidly drying in the warm evening air. The breeze was still almost hot, and getting heavy with car fumes. He ought to close the window.

He ought to be going through the pages for tomorrow's shooting, as well, but the dialog was hardly essential to the plot. If Paul was on schedule, he would be humping Jeff on a hay bale in the barn set, before the stagehands took it all to pieces and rearranged it as the cave interior, with a bunch of Styrofoam slabs that looked convincingly like rock. Some of them were so old, Charlton Heston was probably acting in front of them, in the original Planet of the Apes.

He had eight lines of dialog tomorrow, and they were bad. Paul was not getting any better at putting words into actors' mouths. If he was as good at putting words there as he was at putting his dick here, he would have been brilliant. The script was lying on the chair, on the other side of the bed. Sonny picked it up on his way to the window.

INT. NIGHT -- The Barn. Matt and John meet for the first time in a week. John wants to tell Matt about the roughnecks who suspect him of being a shifter, and are in the woods, laying traps for the wolf. But Matt is too hungry for John's body to listen.

"Save it -- tell me later," Sonny said in Matt's drawl. "You know what I want. I didn't come here to talk."

And Jeff would say, in that deep voice with the rich accent hinting of other cultures, other worlds, But this is important, Matt. You have to listen to what I'm saying to you.

"So I guess I'll listen real good when you can tell me the whole story ... but later, much later, after I've had what I came for," Sonny/Matt would drawl as he opened the buckskin shirt wide, shoved it back over John's shoulders, trapping his arms in it to hold him.

Camera closes in tight on his face as he stoops to John's chest, takes his nipple between his teeth and bites down. John gives a cry of pain and then a groan of pleasure, he tosses his head, and we hear the wolf howl in his voice. His fingers clench into Matt's arms and they wrestle down on a bale of hay ...

"Jesus, Paul, that's shitty dialog, man," Sonny groaned, "you're getting worse."

More likely, Paul was getting just plain lazy, because he knew Sonny and other bright, smart young actors like Jeff Lucas could adlib when they hit their marks; and in any case, the jeans were off in the next half minute, and all the talking was done with hands, lips, cocks.

It was like that at The Corral, in the hours after the front doors closed and the bouncers took station at the side door. The unsuspecting public was never likely to wander in. Every guy in the basement knew the score and was there for the thrill of it. Actions spoke louder than words.

Nobody cared where a guy was from, where he went to school, what he drove, what he did for a job. It was all about the broncs in the corral, and the cowboys outside of it ... who was going to get roped and ridden, and by whom, and how.

The old familiar thrill raced up Sonny's spine again and he dropped the script. The beer he had left on the table by the door, with his wallet and keys, on his way to the bathroom, was still cool enough to wet his throat. He took it to the window, intending to let the hot night air finish drying his hair before he slid into the black jeans, put his feet into the tooled Lucchese leather.

He was reaching for the window, ready to pull it across, shut out the car fumes, lock up for the night, when he looked down into the street. The streetlights were on. The sky was orange, reflecting the city lights. No stars -- not in LA, not inside of Sonny's lifespan. And down below, on the sidewalk right opposite, standing just outside the pool of blue brightness cast by one of the big streetlights, was that face.

That man. Again.

Always the same man, the same face, looking at him with the wide eyes, not even blinking, just staring, as if he could shoot lasers into the middle of Sonny, cut out his guts, or perhaps his soul.

The beer was forgotten and warm on Sonny's tongue. He swallowed with an effort as he saw the face, locked eyes with the man. This made forty times he had seen that face, in two weeks. At first he had assumed the guy was paparazzi, but he never seemed to carry any visible camera. He did not even have a phone that would take the kind of crappy shots few magazines would buy -- these days, digital was all about high quality.

It was an older dude -- he had to be at least fifty, Sonny thought, dressed in jeans and teeshirt and windbreaker, even though it was hot tonight. He just stood there with his hands in the pockets of the jacket, like --

Suddenly Sonny's blood turned cold and he stepped back from the window. Maybe he had seen too many movies, but the way the guy had his hands in the pockets of a jacket, on a night light this --? Gun in the pocket?

His heart thumped as he sidled around, grabbed the cord and yanked it hard to close the drapes over, and then continued on, back to the chest by the bed, and picked up his phone.

Still no text from Jeff, and no missed calls. This time, Sonny hardly bothered to notice. His fingers went through the ritual by themselves. Paul was top of his contacts list, and in seconds the phone was calling. Who else did you call, when you were scared shitless, and right in the middle of a major production -- or the most major production Take a Chance had ever undertaken? You called your producer.

Calling, and getting an answer, were not the same thing. "You have reached Paul Jordan," Paul's nasal voice said in his best level, casual but 'don't mess with me' manner. "I'm busy right now, but leave a message and I'll get right back to you."

"Hey, Paulie, man, call me. Soon." Sonny swallowed hard. He knew he sounded weird. "I think I'm ... I might have a problem," he said, hating voicemail. "Make it fast, all right? Thanks, man."

He hung up but kept the phone in his hand as he returned to the window. He slid along and looked through the crack between the drapes and the window frame ... and swore. The guy was gone. Or had he stepped back away from the light? Was he standing in the deep shadows at the side of the apartment building across the way? "Fuck," Sonny whispered. "Come on, Paulie, call, goddamn it!"

BLURB:

Vampire Daniel Valente struggles to live on his own, now that his master, Titus Antonius Calidus, has found eternal love with another.  Carrying mental and emotional scars, he lives in loneliness and feels as though he’s lost who he once was.

Ryunosuke Kimura has known Daniel for hundreds of years, and loved him for many of them.  Even though he believes Titus is the only one Daniel wants to give his heart to, when he hears Daniel needs his support, he rushes to be with him.

With Ryu at his side, Daniel’s confidence returns, and with it, he sees the enduring love Ryu has always had for him.  As they grow closer, new threats from old enemies arise, and if Daniel and Ryunosuke are to spend eternity together, they must first defeat the past.

EXCERPT:
Daniel walked beside Ryunosuke, their pace slow as they wove around the people going in and out of stores and restaurants.  Though the holidays had passed, many of the decorations were still up, but the festiveness of them did nothing for Daniel’s mood.  He glanced to Ryu, whose eyes scanned the crowd, his posture alert as if waiting for an attack.

Daniel extended his own senses.  No vampires around that he could tell.  But with Ryu being the warrior he was, Daniel knew he didn’t easily let his guard down.  He wanted to say it was the reason Ryu had hardly spoken to him, why they were walking side by side but felt so far apart, but the real truth was Ryu didn’t want to be out with him.  He’d made that clear with his glare when Titus suggested he go with him.

Daniel lowered his gaze to the sidewalk.  How had their relationship taken this bad turn?  It seemed Ryu was rejecting him even before knowing his feelings.  Or maybe, Ryu did know his feelings.  He knew for certain Ryu wasn’t daft enough to not have picked up on his lusting.  It could be that’s what had built Ryu’s walls.  Ryu didn’t want him and was trying to block him before he made a move that could embarrass them both.

Ryunosuke’s voice pulled him from his thoughts.

“I’m not sure this is the best hunting ground.”

Daniel glanced up, looking over the crowd milling about Water Tower Place.  “No, it’s not.  But I don’t know this city well enough to know where is.  At least I’m getting to see this.”  He gestured to the castle-like Chicago Water Tower.  “I’ve heard about it, just never came to see it.”  A long sigh left him.  “It reminds me of home and all the old buildings there.”

Ryunosuke looked at him out the corner of his eye.  “Are you okay?”

“Just feeling a little worn down.”

“I’m sure you are.  We should probably find a prospect soon and get you fed.  The night’s moving fast.”

Daniel nodded, but rather than continue walking, he moved toward a bench and sat.  Not seeming bothered by his decision, Ryunosuke sat beside him.  Daniel gestured toward the trees, still decorated with holiday lights.  “I’ll admit, I felt a bit sad at spending the holidays alone this year.  I shouldn’t have been in such a rush to leave after I was healed, but I thought it’s what would’ve been best for Titus and Andreas.  And myself as well, I suppose. But at least some of the holiday spirit is lingering.  The lights are lovely, aren’t they?”

Ryunosuke glanced at the trees.  “I guess.  I’m not really into the whole Christmas thing.”

“Well, you didn’t have it in your culture for many years.”  Daniel forced a smile, giving Ryu a playful bump with his shoulder and a wink.  “Whereas I, on the other hand, grew up as a good Christian boy.”

Ryunosuke chuckled softly.  “I don’t ever remember you being good or a Christian.”

“Maybe good is stretching things a bit, but the rest is true.  I was Catholic.  Even back when I was a whore, I’d still go to Mass.  Granted I wasn’t allowed inside the cathedral, I was too poor and my soul was already too lost in the eyes of the priests, but I’d still sit on the steps, trying to catch the bits and pieces of the sermon floating out.  Even though I didn’t understand Latin then, there was still something comforting in the words.”

Ryunosuke’s gaze was focused on the ground.  His voice left him hushed, the tone wounded.  “Remember what I told you about using that word to address yourself?”

Daniel looked at him.  “I’m sorry.  An old habit, but I’ll work to break it.”

“And I’ll do what I can to help you, even if it’s just reminding you you’re so much better than that.”

A soft smile rose to Daniel’s lips.  Ryu not only defended him against true foes, but from himself as well.  It sparked hope inside him that their friendship wasn’t as broken as he thought.  He felt the need for Ryu’s touch,  throughout his body, over his skin.  Even the smallest of touches would do.  He just wanted contact from him.

Daniel offered a hand to Ryu.

Ryunosuke looked at it, then met Daniel’s gaze, giving him a gentle smile as he placed his hand in Daniel’s.  He shifted closer to him, sitting so their shoulders and arms touched.  “I never knew you to go to church after we met.  Or maybe you did, but since it’s not a part of my life, I never paid attention.”

“I stopped going after Titus took me in.  When that other bastard owned me, the things he did made me lose all faith in a greater protector, until Titus.  After he rescued me, I saw no need to worship anything or anyone other than him.”

Ryunosuke took a breath as if to say something but slowly let it out in a sigh.

Heavy silence fell between them.

Daniel cleared his throat but still only managed to get his voice out in a whisper.  “A lot has changed now, though.  I’ve come to accept I’m not the one he was meant to be with.  And maybe I’ve always known that, deep down, but I chose to ignore it.  He’s found his soul-mate, his eternal partner, in Andreas.  I won’t deny I still hold some hurt over it; how can I not after loving, wanting, and hoping for so long?  But I’ve also come to care very much for Andreas, and even I can see the beauty of what they have together.  And for all Titus has done for me, there’s a part of me that’s overjoyed at seeing him finally and truly happy.”

Ryunosuke squeezed Daniel’s hand.  “He would be proud of you for saying that.  You’ve grown so much.”

Daniel laughed lightly.  “Yes, it’s only taken me three hundred years or so to mature.”

Ryunosuke grinned and leaned a little more into him.

Daniel pressed back.  “And what about you?  Are you proud of me?”

Ryunosuke tipped his head back, his gaze moving beyond the water tower to look at the stars.  “I’m proud of you, too.  But, I’m also happy to hear that it sounds like you’re getting closer to moving on from him.”

“I’m not getting closer to moving on.  I’m ready to do so now.”

Ryunosuke turned his head to look at him.  There it was, that intense look in Daniel’s soft brown eyes.  Before, he only hoped he was interpreting it in the right way, wanting it to mean Daniel was attracted to him.  Daniel had dropped so many hints and clues about being attracted to him, but he felt the way Daniel talked to him now with such open honesty could be trusted so much more than the flirtations.

Daniel glanced toward the tower again.  He pulled his hand from Ryunosuke’s to rub both of his gloved hands together.  “It feels like it’s starting to get colder.”

Ryunosuke brought his gaze forward.  Or maybe he was wrong about what Daniel was feeling.  His emotions and senses got so muddled around him.  Normally he could read anyone.  But Daniel, what he was thinking and feeling, had always been an enigma to him.  It was as if Daniel could shut off his emotions at times, or he was a master at hiding them when he wanted to.

It made sense, actually.  With what Daniel had gone through when he was young, it was probably a matter of survival to control his feelings and close himself off at times.  But then there were other moments when Daniel’s emotions shone so clear.

Ryunosuke pushed the thoughts aside.  He hadn’t figured Daniel out in countless years.  He sure as hell wouldn’t be able to do it now.  He stood up and half turned away from him.  “I think it’s getting colder, too.  We should find a place to go in for a while.”

“I agree.”  Daniel grinned at him.  “I could do with a warm drink.”

“I’m sure there’s a bar nearby.”

A few hushed chuckles left Daniel.  “That wasn’t the kind of warm drink I was referring to.”

“I didn’t think so.  I was more thinking you might be able to pick up someone who’s already drunk for a quick feeding.”

Daniel sighed and leaned forward, propping up his head up with his elbow on his knee, his chin cupped in his hand.  “So much effort.  It’s gets tiresome.”

Ryunosuke gazed at him, words screaming in his mind to be spoken.  Should he?  He wanted to.  He could feel it inside him, the yearning to give himself to Daniel, to provide him with the life sustaining blood he needed.  But he’d already tried to get Daniel to take his blood before, and if Daniel refused it when he was injured and so desperate for it, why would he take it now?

Still, would it hurt to offer?  There was a chance Daniel could say yes, wasn’t there?  Clinging to the thin hope, Ryunosuke turned toward him again.  He lowered his voice.  “You could always take from me.”

He saw Daniel tense and regretted letting the words have voice.  His mind raced to find a way to smooth over the offer, to make light of it and ease the discomfort he caused Daniel.

“Okay.”

Ryunosuke startled inside.  Daniel didn’t…he couldn’t have…it must’ve been a trick of his mind.  “What did you say?”

Daniel slowly rose to his feet.  He faced Ryunosuke, standing eye to eye with him.  “I said ‘okay’.  If you truly mean it.”

“Of course I do.  I’m surprised, that’s all.  I didn’t think you’d want me.”

Daniel pulled off his glove to touch Ryunosuke’s cheek, wanting to feel Ryu’s skin beneath his fingertips.  He caressed down, settling his hand on Ryu’s chest.  “When it comes to trust, of everyone in the world, of everyone I’ve ever met, only you’re on equal standing with Titus and Andreas in my heart, mind, and soul.”

Daniel’s words wiped any response from Ryunosuke’s mind.  He never thought he’d hear Daniel say he trusted him as much as Titus.  And Daniel’s voice, sensuality overflowed from each spoken word.  This wasn’t flirting.  It was seduction.

Ryunosuke laid his hand over Daniel’s resting on his chest, curling his fingers around it.  “I don’t know what to say.  Thank you.”

“You don’t have to say even that.  In the things you’ve done for me, the care and kindness you’ve given me, those say everything.”

Ryunosuke slid an arm around Daniel’s lower back, drawing him in so their bodies pressed together.  His voice left him in a husky whisper.  “Do you want to go back to the house?”

Daniel shook his head.  “I’m too anxious. I don’t want to wait even the time to get back.  I want to do it right now.”

“I guess we could do things true vampire style.  Find a private place, down an alley or somewhere.”

Daniel gripped Ryunosuke’s hand and started walking.  “Let’s go.”

Excerpt:

Sammy checked Jean’s vitals carefully and nodded, comfortable in the knowledge she was no worse, for the time being. He straightened the covers, tucking them in under her armpits and running his hand over the blanket. He sat on the chair at her bedside and laid his fingers over hers, paying attention to avoid moving the IV in the back of her hand.

“How are you tonight, Jean?” he asked softly.

She shifted her body and opened her eyes. Eyes that appeared too bright, too focussed.
“I’m okay. They gave me some drops a little while ago. Everything feels dull. Like I’m not really here.” She licked her lips.

“That’d be morphine, hon.” He reached for the glass on her bedside table and offered the straw to her. “Want some water?” He sniffed at the clear liquid and added, “Yup, water. You’d think they could add a shot of vodka or something.”

Jean smiled, a weak, wispy thing that quickly faded when Sammy helped her take the straw. Her sucking sounded loud. When she finished, the glass was empty. “Vodka might go nice about now, Sammy.” Her smile came back and remained a few moments. When it faded, she asked, “Where’s Greg? Is he all right?”

“He’ll be here soon. You know how long it takes for him to get here from his job.”

“Yes, too long. I’d like to see him move on. He’s such an amazing man. He doesn’t deserve to have to go through this.” A tear made its way down her cheek, ignored.

“No, he doesn’t. But I’m sure he wouldn’t have it any other way.” He leant down and pressed his lips to her forehead. “He’s going to be fine. I’ll do all I can to get him over the worst of what’s going to happen.” Sammy knew Jean had accepted her fate—after she’d got through blaming the doctors, her parents for the genes they‘d given her and the disbelief that this could actually be happening to her. There had to be some catastrophic mistake, didn’t there? She’d moved on to anger at the world, and the cruelty of whatever gods she believed in. Finally came acceptance. She really was going to die, like everyone else. But she would die a little sooner and have a better idea of the timeline.

“You’ll make sure he doesn’t dwell too long on what’s happened to me, won’t you, Sammy?”

“I’ll do my best, Jean.” Sammy rose and took the glass she’d emptied into the bathroom, where he refilled it. When he returned, he sat down and offered it to her again.

Blurb:

Life is good for vampire Wilson North. His family left him well off. His job as an estate attorney is prestigious, well paying, and non-demanding. He’s gay and out and never had any issues being either. In fact, until the day he ended up beneath his car, bleeding out and only a few pints of blood from a sure trip to the Afterworld, life had never been a challenge.

When Will meets his destiny in the form of an enigmatic Magia named Garrick Forrester he finds the challenge of his life. Garrick’s gay but doesn’t live an openly gay life. Instead, he hides his nature behind his ownership of a BDSM club. The two men instantly know they are mates, but that doesn’t smooth the path to their bonding. Garrick wants Will but threats from his past convince him that the only way to protect his lover is to leave him. Shocked by Garrick’s ability to walk away, Will struggles to understand why his mate doesn’t want him. For the first time in Will’s life, something isn’t easy and he must fight for what he needs or give up his chance for happiness.

Drawn together by destiny. Torn apart by self-doubts and fear. Two men on the cusp of a dream must set aside the lives they’ve always lived for a chance at a new and brilliant future.

Warning: This book contains virgin sex between a sexy self-sacrificing wizard who’s never been catcher and an angelic-faced vampire who’s never pitched, a BDSM bad guy with dark magic, a mysterious royal Acerbian, and a host of characters from previous Tales books who do everything from implode buildings to change diapers…all to help two reluctant heroes find true love.

Excerpt:

Dark lashes flicked up and the beauty of Wilson North blazed through Garrick’s very soul when their eyes met this time. The lure of such angelic masculinity proved too much for him and he found himself pushing off from the marble crypt. He glided toward the bench where Will sat, his sole thought to lose himself in the salvation those dark eyes promised.

A visible shiver went through Will as Garrick stopped before him. Holding out his hand, Garrick silently prayed to the gods that Will would just take it and question things later. At the moment, all Garrick wanted was to touch Will, hold him and love him. Problems and logistics and the real world and all its damned obligations could come into play and be solved—or not—later. For just this moment in time, Garrick wanted to hold Will and breathe him in and know that they belonged to one another.

With eyes blazing, Will slipped his hand into Garrick’s, and they both drew in a breath as a metaphysical crackle of electricity arced between them. Then with a slow, fluid motion like that of wings unfurling, Will came to his feet. Garrick noted the slight wince the vampire gave as his weight settled onto both legs. He sensed rather than saw the pain lancing through Will’s body despite the natural grace of his movements. And he wished with every bit of his theurgic strength that he could heal his mate’s injuries despite the sure knowledge that Will had received the best healing possible after his accident. Helplessness never sat well within Garrick and with this man it spurred his natural possessiveness.

“Your name sounds familiar but if I’d met you before, I would have remembered,” Will said in a low voice. “You’re unbelievably hot.”

Garrick smiled at his soon-to-be lover. “You look like a Botticelli angel,” he replied, knowing that his words would give away the depth to which Will already affected him.

“Me?” Will’s brows winged up in surprise.

“Yes, you.” Garrick used the hand he still held to pull Will closer.

The heat of the vampire’s body registered briefly in his mind as he swept the man against his chest. The strange zing he’d experienced when Will took his hand became magnified a hundredfold as their bodies touched from chest to knee. Will sucked in a harsh breath and Garrick used the moment to reach up and cradle his mate’s dark head in his free hand.

They were nearly the same height but Garrick had a slight inch on Will. Still, their mouths were so close together, they already shared breaths. Garrick knew in the marrow of his bones that soon they would share more. That knowledge drove him to take the mouth of his mate with soft urgency, asking for Will’s capitulation rather than demanding as most Alphas would. At first, the firm lips beneath his own held a touch of Alpha resistance at being taken, but the instant he touched the tip of his tongue to that cool flesh, the man in his arms moaned and became his.

Lips parted, both his own and Will’s. They both sighed, breaths mingling as their hearts thudded in tandem, and they slowly, with absolute irrevocability, breathed each other in. The slightly muddied thoughts Garrick had gotten from Will only moments before shifted to an ice sharp clarity that stabbed his psyche, piercing it with the revelation that he would never be the same again. He belonged to Will. Will belonged to him. They were one whether they completed their mating or not. Destiny could be ignored, but never denied.

The kiss took on a familiarity that spoke of past lives together—if one believed in the reincarnation of souls—and a rightness that settled into Garrick’s head as firmly as Will’s thoughts did. Fear licked him as his tongue traced the edge of Will’s teeth. He understood that Will heard his thoughts now as clearly as he heard Will’s. Their bond ensured neither of them would ever be alone again and the loss of privacy morphed momentarily into a panic driven by the sense that he’d lost himself. But it dissolved almost as quickly as it had come when his tongue twined with the heated roughness of Will’s.

Tasting Will had all the qualities of sipping the finest Cabernet Sauvignon. Will’s flavor burst onto Garrick’s tongue in the same way that the wine’s tannins did, the tartness providing an edge of danger to the elegance. Firm muscles rippled beneath Garrick’s wandering free hand, reinforcing the notion that for all his sophistication, the man in his arms had more depth than a simple clothes horse. Will’s hands closed on Garrick’s buttocks and the Magia had no idea whose hips moved first, but the seductive brush of cloth covered erections made it obvious that it didn’t matter. They were equally aroused.
