Just Desserts by Josh Lanyon

On sale from JCP Books – Just in time for Halloween:

Petit Morts. Five delicious, bittersweet and deadly short stories

BLURB:
Broken in body and crippled in spirit, Ridge Baneberry sees death as the only way out. Not his death, of course—the death of his obnoxious cousin, Raleigh, the one who was responsible for the accident. It’s not easy plotting the perfect murder from his wheelchair, but when Raleigh’s body is eventually found, who’s going to suspect a cripple? Ridge might not be able to get around so easily, but if there’s one thing he has, it’s time.
Then a painfully cheerful physical therapist named Tug shows up at his front door with an appointment book and an agenda. Tug’s personality is equal measures of patience, optimism, and warm Georgia sunshine.
Since this Tug person won’t take no for an answer, Raleigh decides he might as well put him to good use. Almond candy would be the perfect camouflage for a lethal dose of cyanide, and Tug knows just where some gourmet chocolates can be found….

EXCERPT:
Murder had its drawbacks of course, but once the idea came to Ridge, it was hard to get out of his mind.

It began with the argument over the cable bill. Raleigh objected to paying for cable when he was never home to watch TV or use the internet. It didn’t seem to dawn on him that the only reason Ridge was stuck home watching TV and surfing the net was because Raleigh had been driving the car that plowed into the tractor and left Ridge in a goddamned wheelchair.

Ridge reminded Raleigh of that fact—in words of one syllable so Raleigh could understand—and Raleigh turned the usual shades of red, white, and blue and then agreed to pay Comcall their exorbitant rates before he stormed out leaving Ridge to sit at the study window watching his cousin fling himself in his Mazda MX-5 and blast off down the cracked and weed-rutted drive.

There was sour satisfaction to be had in winning their latest skirmish, but some of Raleigh’s barbs had hit home. They worked their way in deep.

You’re not a prisoner. It’s your choice to sit here all day. If I was the one that got crippled, I’d try to show some dignity.

Ridge’s sense of injustice swelled and burst. As luck would have it, he was working on an In Sympathy design at the time. He stared down at the purple and blue line drawing of a Black Prince water lily, and the idea seemed to float into his mind.

The idea that…the world would be a much better place without Raleigh Baneberry.

The world, in general—and Ridge’s world, in particular.

For long moments he sat there, his hands shaking with adrenaline and anger, and he realized with a flash of dazzling clarity that he was right. Not only right but reasonable. Plus, this was something still within his power to achieve. He could do it. He could get rid of Raleigh.

No. No euphemisms. He’d had enough of greeting card sentiments.

He could kill Raleigh.

He could murder Raleigh.

Ridge tested the words, tasted the concept on the palate of his conscience. He found it delicious. Delicious after the months of indignity and pain. Mental pain, of course. Oh, blah, blah, blah. But more to the point, physical pain. Physical pain like Raleigh could never imagine, let alone bear.

In fact, for a few pleasant seconds, Ridge toyed with the fantasy of not killing Raleigh at all, simply leaving him somehow helpless and tethered and in excruciating, agonizing pain from his waking moment to the first troubled dream of the unending night.

But no. Totally unrealistic. Besides, Ridge wanted his inheritance. The inheritance that was now Raleigh’s because he had murdered Uncle Beau when he crippled Ridge. Or as good as. It was when Uncle Beau had received the terrible news that his two nephews had been in a possibly fatal car crash that he’d suffered a massive heart attack and died that very night. Died with his new will—which was, in fact, his old will—unsigned.

And though Raleigh knew the old man had fully intended to make Ridge his heir once more—and even old Mr. Maurice of Maurice, Maurice & Morris had tried to shame him into doing the right thing—Raleigh had clung tight and tenaciously to the letter of the law. Raleigh had prevailed.

And he was going to die for it.

But how?

How?

It had to be something that couldn’t be tracked specifically back to Ridge.

Fortunately, all kinds of people would be happy to see Raleigh out of the way. Ridge had the best motive, no doubt, but he’d likely be dismissed as a serious suspect. He was a helpless cripple, after all, and he’d had three weeks to see how a man in a wheelchair was generally overlooked and dismissed.

Of course, his disability did limit his options. He couldn’t drive, so he couldn’t run Raleigh down in a hit-and-run accident. He couldn’t walk, so he couldn’t disguise himself as a burglar and overpower Raleigh.

Hadn’t he once seen an episode of Columbo where a fragile invalid had pretended to mistake her victim for a prowler and shot him through the heart? That might work. The drafty halls and broken windows of Baneberry Castle would help sell that one.

Complicated, though. And messy.

No—shooting, stabbing, and blunt instruments were probably out. An accident would be best, but given Ridge’s physical limitations, an accident might be hard to arrange.

Which left…?

Ridge backed his chair from the desk and wheeled it over to the ceiling-high bookshelf. There it was. Eight shelves up. Poisons: Their Properties, Chemical Identification, Symptoms, and Emergency Treatments. He set the brake on his wheelchair, gripped the thick mahogany shelf with one hand, used the other to push himself up. He sucked in a sharp breath at the burning sensation of ground glass at the base of his spine. The pain radiated up through his back and down his legs. But he only needed to stand long enough to snatch the book from the shelf. Prize in hand, he lowered himself again to the padded seat.

He nearly shot out of his chair as the doorbell rang.

Unexpected as it was, the feeble tinkle sounded like the heavy chimes of Big Ben. Boom. Boom. Boom. The sound of the old-fashioned bell rang through the long and crooked halls, sprinted up the peeling staircases, and cannonballed out the cracked and broken windows.

The shock of it held Ridge immobile for a long moment. They did not get visitors.

The last visitor who’d rung that bell had been the coroner.

They rarely got deliveries. Most days they didn’t even get mail. Long ago, Ridge had set the local post office straight on the irresponsible filling of their mail slot with junk letters and catalogs for things no one in their right mind needed. The doorbell chimed again.

Ridge wheeled vigorously across the room, down the hall to the door. The simplest things were a pain in the ass when you were in a wheelchair. You couldn’t just yank open a door without banging it into the footrest of the chair. Whatever it was you were doing, you had to position the chair. You had to consider whether you needed to set the brake. You had to remember to keep your hands, arms, elbows and feet within the framework so you didn’t pinch them between the chair and another object. When reaching or stretching or leaning, you had to consider whether you were in danger of overbalancing the chair. Or tipping yourself out of it. You had to consider whether you were rolling yourself into a position you wouldn’t be able to roll out of. That was one of the big things to remember in Baneberry Castle.

So Ridge opened the door partway, using his free hand to back the chair while hanging onto the handle.

A young man in khakis, a navy polo, and tennis shoes stood on the doorstep squirting Binaca into his mouth. The peppermint scent drifted on the breeze. Ridge sneezed.

“Oh. Hi.” The young man leaned over and offered a self-conscious smile through the door opening.

“Yes?” Ridge asked sharply. He had never been fond of the golly-gee school of charm. On closer inspection, the young man wasn’t quite as young as Ridge had thought. He was probably in his early thirties, no more than a couple of years younger than Ridge, though Ridge was looking a hell of a lot older these days. Chronic pain did that to you.

“I’m Tug Gilden.” When Ridge frowned more deeply, Tug said uncertainly, “From our house therapy services?”

Ridge scowled. “Whose house?”

Tug seemed to think it was a trick question. He said cautiously, “Our house?”

“Who are you?”

“Tug Gilden.” Tug smiled hopefully. He was very cute. Not tall but compact and well-made. Tanned, muscular arms, muscular thighs, untidy blond hair cut in crisp waves, wide eyes that matched that expensive shade of Ralph Lauren blue, a smattering of adorable freckles across a boyishly snub nose.

Ridge was pretty much thinking hate at first sight. “Are you insane or am I?” he asked coldly.

“Well…” Tug seemed to give it his full consideration. He said slowly, “Neither, I guess.”

How delightful. Huckleberry Hound had come to visit.

“Go away.” Ridge slammed the door shut.

He gave the wheels a long, hard shove backward, which caused the front of the chair to fishtail to the right, spinning nearly around in a complete circle. The book fell off his lap. Ridge swore. He kept forgetting to use short strokes when reversing. It was a lot harder to propel a chair backwards because the chair’s center of gravity was in front of the casters.

The doorbell chimed again. Tug’s voice said distantly through the thick wood of the gothic design door, “I think we got off on the wrong foot, Mr. Baneberry.”

The wrong foot? This idiot was a natural.

The desire to tell him so to his face got the better of Ridge. He shoved the right wheel, twirled left, and yanked for the door handle. The door opened and naturally banged into the chair, rolling Ridge back a few inches.

“God damn it to hell!”

Tug cautiously poked his head in. “Mr. Baneberry, your insurance is paying for this.”

“If they’re paying for this, I think I’ll sue them!”

Tug craned his head around the edge of the door, spotted Ridge and chuckled. “This is like that who’s-on-first thing, isn’t it? Let me try this again. I’m from Our House Therapy Services. Your application for in-home physical therapy was finally approved by your cousin’s insurance company. So here I am.”

That was excellent news, of course, but somehow it didn’t feel like excellent news. “When did this happen?”

Tug wrinkled his cute little nose. “Last week?”

“And you just show up here? Without a word of warning? You don’t call and set up an appointment? You just show up here.” He seemed to be on a loop. Ridge stopped talking.

“But I did call. I called and spoke to your cousin a couple of days ago. He set up this appointment.”

Ridge opened his mouth. He could think of nothing to say. Well, not to Tugboat Danny anyway. He would have plenty to say to Raleigh when he finally stumbled home in his usual drunken stupor. “I’m sorry you’ve had a wasted trip,” he managed. Once upon a time he’d been a polite, even occasionally charming person, and he still vaguely remembered how it was done.

Tug—and what kind of a name was Tug?—appeared unreasonably disappointed. “I’m sorry. Did I catch you in the middle of something?”

Ridge remembered what he’d been in the middle of when the door bell rang. Why no, I was just plotting to murder only living relative. He threw a quick look at the book now blocking his left wheel. “I…er….”

Tug said quickly, persuasively, “You know, this first meeting is just fifteen or twenty minutes. Not long at all. We’ll just introduce ourselves and talk about how you’re feeling and then we’ll set up your regular treatment schedule.” As Tug spoke, he inched the door open a bit at a time so that by the time he finished he was all the way inside the house and smiling down at Ridge.

That was one of the things Ridge hated most. Having to look up at everyone. He was six feet tall when standing, but he couldn’t stand for more than a few seconds nowadays. He frowned at Tug. Tug smiled confidently down at him, and Ridge noticed he had dimples.

Of course. Because Tug was apparently designed for maximum annoyance.

Uneasily, suspecting that it might be no use, Ridge said, “I’m very busy. I’m working.”

Tug noticed the book still lying on the floor. He stooped, picked it up, handed it to Ridge without glancing at the title. “Well, then, we should get going,” he said. “You do want to get better, right? Your doctor filled out that prescription, you filled out all that paperwork, and the insurance company finally shifted their lazy asses and put it through the system. We’ve lost enough time already.”

That was all perfectly true. It was just that after the shock of Uncle Beau’s death and three agonizing months in the hospital and three weeks of Raleigh being master of Baneberry Castle, Ridge had given up on…pretty much everything. It was disconcerting to have the possibility of hope thrust back at him.

But Tug continued to smile down at him with all that bright and shining certainty, and Ridge felt a tug—ha!—of something he hadn’t ever expected to feel again.

“Oh very well,” he said ungraciously.

To which Tug replied, “Great. Why don’t you show me to your bedroom?”

Like a Father, by Shannon Pearce, Beau to Beau books

Blurb:
Todd’s sister had married a loser, and was now divorced from a loser. She and her stepson, always welcome in Todd’s enormous house, were now living with him. Todd was like a father to Kyle, the young man he had nicknamed Scout, and Kyle loved the man he had come to know as Uncle Todd. Having no idea that this young man, who would be in college soon, had feelings for his soon-to-be male roommate, Todd is surprised when Kyle shares with him his concerns about his own sexuality. Kyle knows that Todd his gay. Todd has never kept that a secret from anyone. When Kyle comes to Todd one afternoon while he is sunbathing in the nude by his pool, the only thing he can do is what he has always done, and be like a father to this young man. Neither Kyle nor Todd is certain, however, of the unspoken boundaries of their close relationship. At Amazon, All Romance ebooks, 1Romance ebooks.

Excerpt:
Kyle was good at everything he did. He was good in school, good at sports, and yet he was very humble. Deanna had raised him well, practically all by herself. Kyle, or Scout, had been on the swim team in high school and his abilities had earned him a scholarship which was paying for much of his college. He had a lean build from the sport, and had filled out nicely over the last couple of years. He looked like a man now. He carried himself with a great deal of confidence. Kyle was built like his dad, about the only good thing that had come of Todd’s sister’s marriage, according to Todd, and because of the bulge in his pants, Todd could tell that Kyle also carried a rather large tool, just like his dad.

Todd had had a very brief fling one night with Kyle’s father, when the two of them had gotten drunk together. He had bet Todd that he couldn’t get off on a man giving him a blowjob, and Todd had proven him wrong, very wrong. The man had enjoyed it, too much for his own taste, and had spent much of his married life sleeping with other women just to prove that he was straight. Deanna had never known about Todd’s one little tryst with her husband, and never would, if Todd had anything to say about it. He knew that her ex wouldn’t say anything. He had been far too embarrassed to admit that he had had the best orgasm of his life the night that Todd had sucked him off.

Fortunately, Kyle did not have the arrogance of his father, just the body. Todd only hoped that Kyle didn’t know about his father’s many indiscretions during his marriage to his sister. The man had had his share of women. That was for sure. Eventually, Deanna had had enough and asked for a divorce.

“Make yourselves at home,” Todd had said, showing them to their rooms. “You’ve got the entire upper floor to yourselves.” Todd looked at his sister’s somewhat sad eyes, and hoped that the kid would be all right, anyway.

***

“Your house is beautiful, Todd,” Kyle had said. “Thanks, Kyle. I didn’t expect you to notice something like that, but I like your taste,” Todd had teased. Todd made a pretty good living, and being single, he had no one to spend his money on, except of course is nephew, so the house he lived in was rather large and very tastefully decorated. One of his former lovers was a decorator, so the house was really quite a showplace by even the toughest standards. “A friend of mine decorated it,” he said, not wanting to say the word lover in front of Kyle, although Kyle knew about his Uncle Todd, of his homosexuality.

Being eighteen and very self confident, Kyle was not shy about asking questions or speaking his mind. “Todd, can I ask you some things?” he said one day while his mom was still at work. “Sure, Scout, sit down, take a load off.”

an Italian Affair, Shannon Pearce, Beau to Beau books

Intro:
Business was good at the firm where Ken worked. It was so good, in fact, that the company had opened a branch in Italy, and Ken had been assigned the job of mentoring the new manager of the Italian interests. Roberto was a good fit for the company, and Ken soon began to look forward to his weeklong trips to Italy. He and Roberto had a good time together, both escaping their somewhat dull lives of nothing but the same every day. When in Italy, Ken felt very exotic and wanted to do exotic things. One night during one of Ken’s weeklong business trips, Roberto confides in Ken that he misses the excitement of group sex that he had often been a very willing part of years ago. Ken listens intently to every arousing detail of Roberto’s past escapades, and admits that what Roberto is telling him is making him more than just a little horny.

Excerpt:
Ken met Roberto several years ago when he had first flown to Italy on a business trip. It had been his first time in Italy, and Roberto had just joined the firm and was in charge of the Italian interests. Ken had made several trips to Italy after that, mentoring Robert, and working closely with him.

Ken had fallen in love with the beautiful country of Italy, its cities with their beautiful architecture, and the Italian countryside was breathtaking. Roberto had shown Ken a little more of his beloved country with every trip that Ken had made. Roberto had taken Ken to all the magnificent Italian sites, the great, the good, and the seamy.

***

Ken and Roberto were both married, with two kids each. Ken had two girls and Roberto had two boys. “When you come to the U.S., bring your wife and kids,” Ken had said every time he had flown to Italy. “Bring the family here, Ken,” Roberto had offered, with his usual hospitality. They both promised that they would, and both knew that they would not really do it.

Weeklong business trips to Italy for Ken, and business weekends for Roberto, were their only escape from their somewhat stagnating lives. They both loved their families, but when the two men were together, it was almost as if they were young again, and unencumbered.

***

On this night, Roberto started to really open up to Ken, and as Ken drank more wine, he talked freely about sex to Roberto, which was unlike him. They both realized that they were looking for other opportunities to screw around. “You know, Roberto, I always think about doing exotic stuff when I’m here in this exotic country of yours,” Ken admitted. “Yeah, like what?” he asked, grinning. “You may be surprised, but I’ve thought a lot about group sex, threesomes, that kind of stuff,” Ken admitted. “No way, not my sweet little American friend,” Roberto teased. “You don’t have it in you.” Ken lightly touched Roberto’s hand. “You might be surprised.”

Roberto grinned at Ken again. “It’s fun, Ken, a threesome. I did it a couple of times years ago, in college, the days of experimentation, don’t you know.” “Yeah, how was it?” “Well, it was with my best buddy and a girl. You really have to trust the people you do those kinds of things with, or at least trust one of them.” Ken just looked at him, waiting and wanting to hear more. “It was the best sex I ever had,” Roberto said, looking off into the distance. Ken was getting horny now, just imagining it.

EXCERPT:
From the story, "Windows"

Because the light's on next door, I can see boxes stacked up in the center of the room, headboards propped against the wall, a mattress tossed carelessly onto the floor beneath the window. Every now and then Rudy comes into view, stepping onto the mattress and then out of sight again as he starts to unpack. I wonder if this will be their bedroom. I wonder why I care.

It doesn't take me long to get the rest of the paint off the window and just as I'm about to move onto the next one, I hear Bradley's voice drift up from the other house. He's so loud. "Rudy, darling," he says, and then he laughs, that magical sound that's begun to bring a smile to my lips whenever I hear it. I've decided I quite like that laugh. "You know that's not where I want that dresser to go."

Rudy says something indistinct and then Bradley laughs again. Against my better judgment, I pull the sheer curtains in front of the window and peek out between them. Down in the room below, Bradley steps up onto the mattress, tanned legs and thick arms and the broad expanse of his back just begging to be touched. By me, I think as Rudy comes up to him, rubs his hands down the bunched muscles in Bradley's arms. I don't need to be watching this.

But I can't turn away. I remind myself of the other window, the dishes in my sink, my bed, things I can be doing, should be doing, but I can't seem to turn away from the window. Rudy leans close to Bradley, whispers something that makes him giggle, and then starts to knead his lover's arms, his shoulders, his neck. "I think he's kind of cute," Bradley says in reply.

My breath catches in my throat. They're not -- God, I wish I could hear whatever it is Rudy says that makes Bradley turn around and glance at my house, up at me. They see me, I think wildly, and without thinking I cross the room and hit the switch to cut off the overhead light. My heart beats like a drum in the darkness, hard enough to bruise my ribs, they saw me. Saw me watching, and Bradley said what? I think he's kind of cute. Jesus Christ.

Go to bed now, Thom, my mind whispers even as I start towards the window again. They've got names for guys like you, watching your neighbors through the curtains. You want this kid to call the cops on your perverted ass? Just go to bed and forget all about him and his tight skin and his infectious laugh.

Only I can't, and this time I stand to one side of the curtain, out of sight. I pull the edge of the fabric away from the window just enough so I can see, and I promise myself one more look, that's it, just to see if they're still talking about me and then I'll go. I swear --

Bradley stands at the window now, hands on the sill in front of him, legs spread wide, head thrown back. Behind him, Rudy has his jeans down to his knees, his boxers open, working his dick hard with one hand. The other is in the front of Bradley's shorts, squeezing, stroking, I can feel that hand, it tugs at my own erection, rolls my own balls in the palm, fondles me. My own hand strays below my belt, rubs against the thick swelling at my crotch. I'm not seeing this, I think. I'm not watching it. I'm not.

Rudy's dick stands up from a dark swirl of hair, angry and red. He pulls Bradley's shorts down in the back, exposing a tight ass. No tan lines, I think absently. How cute.

Suddenly Rudy disappears. "Come on, Rudy," Bradley moans, grabbing at the front of his shorts. "Please. I need it."

I ache at that voice, that plea. Another few seconds and I'll rush over there myself, take him in my arms and thrust into him, I'm hard enough already. But Rudy returns, his erection glistening from a lubricated condom, and he swats Bradley's hand away as it kneads the thick shaft that tents his shorts. "Rudy," Bradley starts, and that's as far as he gets before Rudy shoves into him, his hands finding their way into the front of Bradley's shorts again.

Bradley's eyes slip closed, his lips part, his cheeks go slack and what I wouldn't give to have him lean back into me like that, to moan my name instead of Rudy's, to cry out yes, please, harder, God YES for me. Even from this distance, I can hear the steady uh uh uh as he meets Rudy thrust for thrust, and each moan makes me tremble, each gasp makes me throb. "Rudy," he sighs, arching back against his lover, bucking into him, harder, faster, setting a furious rhythm that ends with Rudy collapsing against Bradley's back and the front of Bradley's shorts growing damp.

I sink to the floor, my knees to my chest, my pants viselike around my own raging erection. I can hear Bradley giggle, breathless, and then Rudy says something I can't quite catch. I'm sure it's about me, they know I'm here, they did that just for me.

Don't be silly, that voice in my mind tells me. They're lovers. First night in a new house, worked up a sweat all day, of course they were looking for release.

In the window. After they saw me watching them. Yeah, right.

A Chance Taken, by Shannon Pearce

INTRO:
A Beau to Beau short story
Sensual and Sexual, with Passion, Pleasure, and Longing

Friends for years, Greg and Mike have laughed together, cried together, and learned together. Although Greg has now reached the pinnacle of his career, failed personal relationships have left him feeling empty and alone. The one person who knows him best understands Greg’s emptiness and knows exactly who can replace this emptiness with love and passion, and leads Greg to a life and love he would have never thought possible.

EXCERPT:
Greg was the chef of the group and had gone to Mike’s house early in the morning that day to prepare his prized prime rib with his special seasonings. Greg had stayed awhile afterward for coffee with Mike, and then had come over quite often during the day to check on the prime rib and to share another cup of coffee with Mike each time. Mike thought nothing of these frequent visits at first but as the day went on, he suspected that Greg wanted something more because he would linger a bit longer each time he came, just wanting to talk.
******
They were now standing face to face, their naked chests just inches apart. Mike gazed into Greg’s eyes as yet another tear slid down his face. Mike whispered, “Show me, Greg, you can do it.” Mike put his hand on Greg’s naked, hot shoulder, his skin warm against the hardness of his muscles. Greg moved closer to Mike until the hairs of their chests mingled, the heat of Greg’s thick hard chest muscles warming Mike’s own skin. They fell into a bear hug, with Greg’s face burrowed into Mike’s shoulder, as Greg began to sob quietly. Mike took Greg into his arms and held him tightly with one hand holding his head next to him, as he felt Greg’s chest heave with his sobs, his tears wetting Mike’s shoulder.
******
Slowly, Mike rubbed his hands across Greg’s back and down to his butt cheeks, exploring the huge muscles underneath the cloth of Greg’s pants as he felt Greg’s strength and his heat. Mike pushed Greg back a little, took his hands in his, and hooked Greg’s fingers into the waistband of his shorts. “Strip me, Greg,” Mike whispered, as he pushed his hands down, starting to slide his shorts over his hard cock and full and eager balls. Greg looked down at Mike’s cock emerging from the cloth, and he crouched to pull Mike’s shorts completely off, then freeing them from his feet, and then returning his gaze to Mike’s now completely naked manhood, his cock head oozing pre-cum, his shaft pointed toward the ceiling and throbbing to the beat of his own heart. Mike took Greg’s hand again, and placed it on the shaft of his cock. “Feel me, Greg,” Mike whispered. “I’m all yours.”
******
Slowly, Mike pulled Greg to the floor until he lay flat on the rug in front of the fire, his legs splayed open framing his hard, pulsing cock which rose high above the thick mass of his curly hair that surrounded his cock and balls, trailing up his hard, rippled abdomen into the curly matt of hair covering his hard chest. Mike straddled Greg’s head, his own hard cock now dancing above Greg’s hairy lips, his balls dangling down above Greg’s eyes. Mike’s lips explored Greg’s chest of thick hair and his tender nipples which stiffened to a hard bud as Mike sucked and licked each of them, rubbing his beard against Greg’s chest hair and across the hard buds until Greg moaned with desire each time Mike tasted his tender, hot nipples.

I Am the Rain

Another free read from Rowena Sudbury. This will never be published as it is far too short.

It was the wind causing the tears to run down his face as he hurried away from the source of pain. He knew it was the wind, it wasn't the pain. Couldn't be the pain. He was tough, nothing hurt. Ever.

The wind whipped his hair into his eyes. Impatient as he raised his hand to push it aside and he realized two things. He'd left his coat, and there was blood tracking with the tears down his cheeks.

Keep walking, keep moving, and don't give in to the misery looming just above.

Footsteps slowed as he reached the bridge. It arched high over nothing below, one of the mysteries of man, a bridge with no apparent function. He turned and the wind blew full force into his face.

And then the shivering started. This time the tears were real. He gave way and let them pour out.

Heat, pain, humiliation. Closed in.

He wrapped his arms tightly around himself; poised on the brink of the abyss, lacking the bravery to do anything other than just stand there and let the misery ebb over him.

He stiffened immediately when he sensed the presence beside him, knowing they had followed to taunt this breakdown of control. But the hand that touched him was gentle, belying the strength behind it.

Head bowed he allowed himself to be gathered close, wrapped in the overlarge black coat, held against the steadily beating warmth of his savior.

No recriminations, just the comforting scent of protection.

Comfort, and something more.

Everything receded, agony replaced with care. Shivering stilled as a different kind of heat radiated from the solid strength. Eyes closed they breathed as one.

The storm, physical and emotional still raged, but was calmed as strong fingers tipped his face back, and electric blue eyes gazed down upon him. He closed his eyes and allowed his lips to be taken. The kiss was whiskey smooth, liquid warm, overpowering.

Together they turned. He huddled against the larger man, his steps no longer stumbling. Walked down the other side of the arch, toward promises kept.

Two Christmases by Anne Brooke (excerpt)

This is an excerpt from Two Christmases, a short story in the latest anthology from Dreamspinner Press, Mistletoe Madness:

I slipped the letter into my jeans pocket the moment I saw it, feeling the faint crackle of paper between my fingers. Didn’t need to ask who it was from, the bastard. Bloody Marty. He’d thought I wouldn’t be able to stop Jake from reading it, but I’d left early, laughing off my boyfriend’s surprise, and catching the first tube up into town. Beating the weekday Christmas shoppers. Now I was here at Jake’s office, rifling through his mail tray, trying to stop my world from blowing apart.
It had been a stupid thing to do. I knew it. Mental note to self: never agree to see an old boyfriend and, if you have to, don’t whatever you do go drinking with him. Especially not in the Heaven nightclub. God knows what had possessed me anyway. Even though Jake was a good ten years older than Marty, he was far better in bed – by miles. Even though you weren’t supposed to admit that kind of stuff these days, were you? But it was true. Jake always took his time. I liked that. Even the thought of him now doing the kind of stuff he did with me made my cock push against my flies. I shook my head and tried to ignore it – couldn’t afford to be slowed down by anything.
Because I liked Jake. I mean really liked. Since I’d met him – early spring at his work do of all places – my life had improved beyond all belief. I was off the drugs, almost, I’d gone easy on the drinking and even the boss was smiling at me more. Now and then. Not only that but, what was rare for me, I hadn’t messed around with anyone apart from Jake since we’d been together.
Not since last week that is. Bloody bloody Marty. How could I have been so stupid? And what the hell was Jake going to do when he found out? I couldn’t bear the thought of losing him, couldn’t begin to imagine it. Whatever the cost, I had to stop him finding out.
I made a quick search of the rest of the mail on my boyfriend’s desk, found nothing else with Marty’s handwriting, so sat down on Jake’s executive chair and took out the letter. When I glanced at the clock it showed 7.30am. I knew Jake usually got here at 7.45am and his secretary arrived at eight. Unless there was something urgent on. Today I hoped there wasn’t. I fingered the letter. I should just shred it, cut the bastard out of our lives, try to find some way of stopping him doing this again, God knows how.
I shouldn’t read it.
But I had ten minutes before I needed to leg it and the next thing I knew I was tearing open the envelope, hands trembling, and unfolding the paper inside.

Dear Jake, the letter said,
You don’t know me but my name’s Marty Smithson and I used to know Danny. I gather you’re a straight-up kind of a bloke, so I won’t mess with you. You think Dannay’s clean from the drugs now, but I think you should know he isn’t – at least not by the amount of skunk he smoked outside Heaven when I met up with him last week. Thursday night, if you’re interested. Don’t know what you were doing then but I sure as hell know you weren’t doing Danny. That’s because I was – I like revisiting old pastures once in a while. For your information, we did it twice – once in the Gents’ and once outside, by the bins. He was up for it both times. Maybe he’s told you all this, though, in the new, civilised, totally honest life he apparently has with you? I certainly hope so.
With every good wish
Marty Smithson

As I read, I felt my face colour up and my hands started shaking. God, the bastard. I could just see his smug smile while he wrote it too. If he was here now, I’d wipe that smile off his face. Big time.
As soon as I’d finished the letter, I tore it into as many pieces as I could and put my head into my hands. A small groan escaped me. The trouble was Marty was right; I’d been out of my head that night and I’d have been up for it with the first bloke who came along. I should never have let myself get into that state, and I should never have been out with Marty anyway. And from the sound of what he’d written, it didn’t seem like he’d be giving up on this one so easily either.
My own fault. Again. If I hadn’t dumped him like I had just after I met Jake, then maybe he wouldn’t be doing this now. Because I hadn’t been nice. I’d been a class one bastard about it, so I was probably getting what I deserved. I’d been drugged up at the time then too – that was the only thing that could explain it. I didn’t usually make a habit of being cruel to my exes. Now, though, all that crap was coming back to haunt me.
I should go though. No time for moping.
Scraping back the chair, I sprang to my feet and gathered up the scraps of paper, stuffing them into my jeans pocket again to get rid of them later. It felt like they were burning a hole through the denim. At the same time, Jake’s office door swung open and his PA, Miranda, marched in, all high-heeled shoes and executive calm.
Her eyes widened when she saw me and she stood stock still, holding her PDA a little closer to her chest as if I might be about to leap over the desk and mug her for it.
Mind you, I couldn’t blame her reaction. Next to her, I must have looked like a tramp. Second-best jeans, jumper, unbrushed hair and the beginnings of stubble I hadn’t got round to shaving yet.
‘Hi,’ I stumbled sideways, banging my knee on the table edge as I did so and trying not to swear. ‘Didn’t expect you yet. Sorry to startle you. Just thought I’d give Jake a surprise, leave him a message, you know? But then I … I decided against it …’
Even I realised how pathetic that sounded. How very unlikely.
Miranda glanced round the room, presumably to check I’d not taken anything I shouldn’t. She then pursed her lips and tried to smile. Almost as if she’d decided to be generous to the no-hoper street life that had just crawled out of her boss’s office. Snooty bitch. She’d never liked me.
Still, I couldn’t blame her for that now. I didn’t like me much either.
